Once Bitten (Alexa O'Brien Huntress Book 1) - Trina M. Lee As I mentioned in an earlier review, if you are going to read Once Bitten, you should probably pick up Huntress and Stunner first. They are short and sweet (well, not really sweet, but they are short) and they give you just enough background info to get you up to speed.Alexa is a werewolf that was turned when she was a teen. She works with a group of werewolves and vampires that ‘police’ the supernatural community. They hunt rouge vampires and werewolves who are careless and threaten to expose the world they live in that needs to remain hidden. She is also much more than just a werewolf. She has a power that she was born with that makes her special enough to gain the attention of a very powerful vampire. This is where the story begins to get interesting.Just to give cautious readers fair warning. If you are a reader who has a strong dislike of love triangles, skip this one. Even though it isn’t a YA book and we aren’t talking about teens who can’t make up their mind, the triangle exists and it is a HUGE part of this book. I’m the type of reader who can tolerate a triangle. It does have to make sense and not be forced and it also has to fit the story. I honestly felt like Once Bitten’s love triangle made sense. Alexa is a complex character. She is in love with a wolf who is essentially her mate, yet the strength and power she gains from the vampire she has inadvertently bonded with is too strong a draw to ignore. I’m sure that a balance will be found later in the series, but for now, this is the way it works. It’s hard to explain unless you read the book, trust me.One of the reasons why I could accept the love triangle was because of Ayrs’ attitude. He knows that he isn’t her ideal choice as far as mates go. He shows a sensitive side in his ‘relationship’ with Alexa that caused me to like him even though I wasn’t sure that I should. Shaz’s love and devotion for Alexa was perfect for her ‘wolf’ side. She needed him for balance. It will be interesting to see where both of these relationships end up. I can’t see how she can physically give up either one of them and still be whole. Like I said, it’s going to be interesting. The rest of the supporting characters help round out the story. Alexa has a lot of good and loyal friends who watch her back. I really liked getting to know them all. It was fun to watch the interaction between all the characters. The mix of vampires and were animals working together was interesting and fun. They truly cared about each other and it obviously went beyond ‘pack.’As far as the rest of the story went? Let’s just say that there were lots of twists and turns. Just when you thought that you had things figured out, Trina M. Lee threw another curve. Although I kind of figured out one HUGE twist before the rest of the characters did, it could have gone either way. The fact that I figured it out didn’t spoil anything once the rest of the characters caught up. The other twists that Once Bitten ended with more than made up for it.There are currently 5 books in this series. I can’t wait to see where the author takes these characters next. The two prequels and the first book are currently free on Amazon, so you have nothing to lose by giving this series a chance.
